Doing Business in China - Top Practical Tips on IP Strategy and Budgets for SME and all IP owners

It will come as no surprise that the IP landscape in China continues to change at a rapid pace. At long last a new Trade Mark Law is expected to come into force later in 2013, an amended Copyright Law is being circulated, and the Supreme People’s Court is likely to rule on a number of key issues. On top of these legislative changes, major policy initiatives have dramatically impacted on key IP driven industries, including biotech, energy, high tech manufacturing and automotive.

This talk will reflect on all these changes and tell you what you need to know about entering the Chinese market and how to best exploit and enforce your IP there - safely and within a given budget. How can you measure and assess whether your strategy is working? Learn about the up to date Chinese IP scene and what the future holds as it affects you. How can you safely licence your IP to local Chinese corporations and be sure the contract holds up? Are local relationships everything and contracts worth nothing? Dealing with officials and confronting corruption….

James Brodie, Manager, Scotland and China Business Adviser for the China-Britain Business Council

James will deliver a presentation on his own experience of working with British companies in China, and what the practical realities are of licensing technology there. Anecdotal evidence will be provided of both success stories, as well as failures, and he will look at what services currently exist for companies facing such issues in China, including those of the CBBC, and some of the broader cultural issues at play in Sino-British trade.
